Dementia/Memory Evaluation
CMPS provides the highest level of neuropsychological evaluation of memory disorders in the area. The crucial aspect is to identify whether an individual's memory problems are normal for their age, slightly below normal (Mild Cognitive Impairment), or so far below normative performance that it qualifies for a dementia condition. In conjunction with the patient's physicians, CMPS staff also attempts to identify the most likely cause of such a condition. It is important to note that there a multiple potential causes of such a condition or diagnosis, not just Alzheimer's, such as stroke, Parkinson's Disease, vascular problems, or medications. Differential diagnosis requires also assessing psychological based reasons for memory or cognitive problems such as anxiety, depression, or even family stress.
CMPS staff (with 10 neuropsychologists) provides dementia/memory evaluation services to: the Roskamp Institute, Sarasota Memorial Hospital (including the main hospital, the SMH Memory Disorders Clinic, and SMH Bayside Center for Behavioral Health) and Scienza.
The CMPS Dementia Evaluation Team is headed up by Dr. Kelley O'Neal:
Kelley O'Neal, Psy.D. neuropsychologist with geriatric specialization, obtained his doctoral degree in 2004 from the California School of professional Psychology. His pre-doctoral training involved geriatric neuropsychological and psychological evaluation at Dorothea Dix Hospital on a geropsychiatry unit and a forensic unit. He performed his 2-year post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Living in Connecticut which involved performing neuropsychological evaluations in a memory disorders clinic with geriatric and adult populations suffering from memory and other cognitive and psychological problems. Since joining Comprehensive MedPsych Systems in 2006, he has provided many years of outpatient neuropsychological evaluations as well as providing neuropsychological services to HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Memory Clinic, the Lee Memorial Hospital Memory Clinic and most recently, the Roskamp Institute. He is the only neuropsychologist in the area with certification for examination for legal competency. He is one the most experienced neuropsychologists in the area in the field of dementia and memory disorders assessment.
